These Broken Stars Book Review

It's a night like any other on board the Icarus.

Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury space liner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet.

Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone. Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they're worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other's arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won't be the same people who landed on it.

"I'm not doing much at all. I might as well be a rag doll. Comes complete with matching shoes. Spine sold separately." --Lilac

"And there it is, against all hope, like the sun peeking out from behind the clouds. The smallest hint of a smile." --Tarver

"You don't mention death when it's hovering near someone you love. You don't want to attract the reaper's attention." --Tarver

"In this moment I know that this is what I wanted. This is what I wanted that night in the salon, and it's what I've wanted every day since then." --Tarver

"I'm busy sitting up too, because when you go to sleep wrapped around a pretty girl, there are some things going on first thing in the morning that you don't exactly want making headline news." --Tarver

"Mmmm. You didn't like it much. You have the foulest mouth I've ever encountered, Major. I didn't even recognize half the languages you can swear in. I'm glad I'm not one of your soldiers. Still, it ws rather educational." --Lilac

"That it reminded me why I was returning to that ship wreck of the dead. That there's only one person in the galaxy I could've done it for. But I can't say those things to him, not yet." --Lilac

"And Lilac, I was right. Forget everything else. Forget everyone else. You're exactly my kind of girl." --Tarver

"It's a little disconcerting that Lilac thinks best in bed. My brain pretty much flat lines under the same circumstances." --Tarver

"For a moment the image before us is frozen: our world, our lives, reduced to a handful of broken stars half lost in unchartered space." --Tarver

Lilac and Tarver first meet aboard the Icarus space ship.

She is the daughter of the builder and richest man in the universe.  She has grown up knowing she can have any thing she wants or needs, except friendship.  Her every move and friend is watched and controlled by her father.  She has learned to push every one away for their own safety while playing the high society "game" she has grown up in.

Tarver is thrust into high society as a "show pony" for the rich.  He grew up poor and made it to fame when he saved a group of people on a military mission.

The two meet at a party and Tarver doesn't know who she is.  They talk and flirt, each thinking the other would be interesting to know.  But they are interrupted by Lilac's entourage and thrown apart.

They next meet a few days later.  Lilac realizes he has no idea who she is and is forced to be mean and turn him away when he asks for a date.  Stinging with the realization of who and what she is, Tarver forces himself to stay far away from her.

Until the Icarus begins to crash.  The two are thrown together when Tarver saves Lilac in the mass of people.  Due to her knowledge of the ship, she gets the two of them to a escape pod.  The pod begins to malfunction, and only thanks to having Lilac in the pod, are they able to eject from the ship and make it to safety.

Instead of being safe in orbit waiting for rescue, they are drawn into the gravity pull of a nearby planet and crash.  They are safe, while the rest of the ship and everyone on it, is destroyed in the crash.

Tarver takes command of their rescue reasoning that if they get to the downed ship remains, they will be rescued when workers come to salvage the ship.  So begins a trek across the face of a strange, unoccupied planet.  There are terrors and trials as they travel.

The two begin to be friends despite the walls they both have up for their safety.  But when Lilac begins to hear voices, Tarver fears she is going crazy with the stress.  It isn't until she "sees" the voices and saves them from certain death that Tarver has doubts about the planet and what it is doing to her.

When they finally make it to the ship, they realize that no one is coming to save them.  By now, the voices have taken quite a toll on the couple as well as the lack of food.  When Tarver gets hurt and becomes sick, Lilac must face her fears to save him.  She uses the help of the "voices" to do so and he soon recovers.

The pair decides it's time to make more permanent plans, but the "voices" lead them to a man made building on an otherwise unoccupied planet.  The building is locked, but they know they must get inside to solve the question of the voices and the strange happenings on the planet.

Working together, the two declare their feelings for each other and become a couple.  They finally decide to blow the building open, and Lilac convinces Tarver she should be the one to do it.  Things go wrong and Lilac is seriously hurt.

When Tarver realizes he can not help her, himself, or the voices, they step in and help Lilac in a unconventional way.  She is healed, but not quite herself and decides the only thing she can do is get Tarver home to his family without her.

The two discover the secrets of the voices and the planet inside the building.  They discover Lilac's father is not who she thought he was and instead had drastic plans for this world and the "voices".

Tarver knows he must do something to "fix" Lilac and help the voices, so in a decision that puts all their lives in jeopardy, he ends up destroying the building and everything in side.  It works and Lilac is saved, the voices are gone, and the rescue beacon is received.

When the rescue party comes, Tarver and Lilac are separated.  She is taken to have medical tests done and see her father while he is taken to be "debriefed".  Within the entire store are bits and pieces of this debriefing and the story Tarver and Lilac tell the world.

Lilac forces her father to accept Tarver as part of her life and he is released so they can be together.  The planet is mysteriously blown up, destroying all evidence of what took place there, and leaving the pair to fight against the things they have learned.
